これが言いたい！　隠岐島の魅力を英語で書いてみました

During the Edo period (1603-1868),
the port of Saigo on the Oki Island became a major port of call for Kitamae-bune (Kitamae ships).

江戸時代、隠岐の島の西郷港は北前船の主要な寄港地になりました。

Kitamae-bune is a trade route connecting Osaka and Hokkaido.

北前船とは、大阪と北海道を結ぶ貿易航路です。

The ships stopped at ports facing the Seto Inland Sea and the Sea of Japan on their way to transport specialties from each area.

船は途中瀬戸内海から日本海に面する港に立ち寄り、
各地の特産品を運搬しました。

It’s said that one round trip voyage from Osaka to Hokkaido
can generate 150 to 200 million yen in today’s money,
and each port of call benefited from this revenue and developed as a result.

大阪から北海道まで1往復の航海で、
現在の金額にして1億5千〜2億円の収益があり、
各寄港地もその恩恵を受けて発展したと言われます。

The port of Saigo also developed thanks to the Kitamae ships.

西郷港も北前船のお陰で発達しました。

Obsidian is a glassy black stone.
When it’s broken, it becomes very sharp and can be used as a blade.

黒曜石はガラス質の黒い石です。
割るととても鋭利になり、刃物として使うことが出来ます。

People have used obsidian for knives and arrowheads for hunting.

人々は、
ナイフや狩猟のための矢じりとして黒曜石を使用して来ました。

There are several obsidian production areas in Japan,
but the obsidian mined in the Oki Island is considered
to be of particularly high quality.

日本には幾つか、黒曜石の産地がありますが、
隠岐島で採掘される黒曜石は特に品質が良いとされています。

Obsidian from the Oki Island had been widely distributed
across the Sea of Japan from Kyushu to the Tohoku region since about 30,000 years ago, when transportation was not developed.

交通の発達していないおよそ3万年の昔から
隠岐島の黒曜石は日本海を渡って広く九州〜東北地方にまで流通していました。

This can be evidence of how important the obsidian of Oki was to the ancient people.

このことは隠岐の黒曜石が、
古代の人々にとっていかに大切な物だったかを表す証拠と言えるでしょう。

At the Matengai cliffs on Nishinoshima Island
and the Akakabe cliffs on Chiburi Island,
you can see the desolate natural scenery.

西ノ島の摩天崖(まてんがい)、知夫里島の赤壁(あかかべ)では
荒涼とした自然の景観を見ることが出来ます。

You can see endemic species that exist only on the Oki Islands,
such as the Oki heron, Oki salamander, and Oki dandelion.

オキノウサギやオキサンショウウオ、オキタンポポなど
隠岐島だけに存在する固有種を見ることが出来ます。

Due to the influence of ocean currents,
the area around the Oki Islands is a very good fishing ground.

海流の影響で隠岐諸島周辺はとても良い漁場になっています。

You can also enjoy fresh fish and shellfish.

新鮮な魚貝類を楽しむことも出来ます。

You can also go fishing, sea kayaking,
and trekking to experience nature firsthand.

釣りやシーカヤック、トレッキングで自然を肌で感じる事も出来ます。

The people of Oki call “Honshu island“ ”Hondo”.
Hondo means main land on Japan.

隠岐の人々は、本州を「本土」と呼びます。

On a clear day,
you can see the Shimane Peninsula
and Mount Daisen on Hondo from the Oki Islands.

晴れた日には隠岐諸島から本土にある島根半島や大山が見えます。

The Oki Islands are separated from “Hondo” by a strait of about 50 km.
The sea have made the Oki Islands developed a unique nature
and history different from that of Hondo.

隠岐諸島は50km余りの海峡で本土から隔てられています。
この海によって隠岐諸島は本土と違う独自の自然と歴史を育んで来たのです。
