「地元を英語で説明しちゃおう」シリーズ、
「島根」「松江」に続いて第3回は「隠岐」です。
6月末、隠岐島後に行って来たのですが…。面白すぎた！
旅の様子は他の記事に記すとして、
今回は隠岐の魅力を英語で解説する試みパート1です。
隠岐って…、そうだったんですね〜。
なるほどどうりで…。やっぱりタダものではないな(ﾟДﾟ)
と言うことで行ってみましょう！
【隠岐ってどこ？ 基本情報を英語でチェック！】
A few days ago, I went to the Oki islands.
先日、隠岐島に行って来ました。
The Oki Islands are located 50 to 60 kilometers off the coast of Matsue City, in the Sea of Japan.
隠岐諸島は松江市の50〜60km沖、
日本海の洋上にあります。
It takes about 2 and half hours from Shichirui port in Matsue city by ship.
隠岐諸島へは松江市の七類港から、
フェリーでおよそ2時間半で行くことが出来ます。
This is the third time for me to visit the Oki islands,
every times the beautiful landscapes and delicious seafoods fascinate me very much.
隠岐には3度目の訪問になりますが、
いつも美しい景色と美味しい魚貝類に魅了されます。
The Oki Islands consist of four inhabited islands
and more than 180 uninhabited islands.
隠岐諸島は4つの有人島と180余りの無人島からなっています。
The Oki Islands have an area of 346㎢ and a population of about 21,000.
その面積がおよそ346㎢、人口はおよそ21000人。
The islands are not large, but
they have played a very important role in the history of Japan.
決して大きくない島々ですが、
隠岐は日本の歴史上、とても重要な役割を果たして来ました。
Why?
なぜでしょうか？
The main reasons are the location of the Oki islands
and the existence of a certain stone on them.
その主な理由は隠岐諸島の位置、
そしてある「石」の存在があります。
隠岐が流刑の地となった理由を英語で説明すると
In Japan, the idea of Feng Shui has been adopted since ancient times.
日本では古くから風水の考えが取り入れられています。
Feng Shui is the study of managing one’s living environment
in order to improve one’s luck.
風水とは運気を上げるために、
自らの生活環境を管理する学問です。
According to Feng Shui,
the northwest direction is a lucky direction.
風水によると、北西方向は縁起の良い方角です。
The Oki Islands, located to the northwest of Kyoto (the capital of Japan at the time), were considered to be a land of good fortune.
当時の日本の首都・京都から見て北西方向にある隠岐諸島は、
縁起の良い土地とされました。
So the abalone from the Oki islands is a very indispensable thing
for court ceremonies as a good fortune.
そこで隠岐島のアワビは縁起の良いものとして、
宮中の儀式では欠かす事の出来ない物になっています。
The Oki Island is famous as the place where Emperor Go-Daigo was exiled.
This is also because Oki Island was a special place.
隠岐島は後醍醐天皇が流刑された地として有名ですが、
これも隠岐島が特別な存在だったからです。
Emperor Go-Daigo was not pleased with the samurai’s politics.
He was captured for trying to start a rebellion.
サムライの政治を快く思っていなかった後醍醐天皇は、
反乱を起こそうとしたために捕らえられます。
Emperor Go-Daigo is a criminal to the ruler at that time.
時の権力者からすれば後醍醐天皇は犯罪者です。
But the emperor is special like god.
The ruler didn’t want to treat him lightly.
So the ruler sent the emperor to a special island, Oki.
しかし天皇は神のような特別な存在です。
権力者は天皇を無下に扱う訳には行かず、
特別な島、隠岐に送ったのです。
隠岐には後醍醐天皇の他にも
後鳥羽上皇(ごとばじょうこう)も流されてるんですね！
天皇がお二人も（ﾟдﾟlll）
やっぱり隠岐、タダものではない!!
