という事で、英語で勾玉紹介するシリーズ第3回！
最終回の今回は三種の神器の一つ「八尺瓊の勾玉」、
そのルーツにまつわるお話です。
あと、勾玉に開いてる穴、
そこに込められた思いについて英語でご紹介します。

日本神話の中の勾玉 【Magatama in Japanese Myth】
There is a myth that has been passed down regarding the Magatama of the Emperor of Japan.
天皇の持つ勾玉には一つの伝説が伝わっています。

The legend of the royal magatama goes like this:

ヤマタノオロチとスサノオノミコト 【suffer from】
Long long time ago there was a male god called Susanoo-no-Mikoto.
かつてスサノオノミコトと言う男神がいました。

Long long time ago there was a male god named Susanoo-no-Mikoto.

He heard people who lived in Izumo region (part of present-day Shimane prefecture) suffered from a eight-headed dragon called Yamata-no-Oroti.
彼は出雲の地(現在の島根県の一部)に八つの頭を持つ龍(ヤマタノオロチ)が現れて、
民衆を苦しめている事を聞きます。

He heard that an eight-headed-dragon, Yamata-no-Orochi, had appeared in Izumo (part of present-day Shimane prefecture) and was a great source of pain and suffering for the people.

He gave the dragon a lot of alcohol.It drank and drank, until at last, it fell asleep.
彼は大量の酒を龍に捧げます
龍はその酒を飲み、やがて眠ってしまいます。

He presented the dragon with a massive amount of sake,
and as Yamata-no-Orochi drank, it eventually fell asleep.

Then Susanoo-no-Mikoto cut the neck of Yamata-no-Oroti, killing it.
そこで彼は龍の首を切り退治してしまいました。

Then Susanoo cut the dragon’s neck, killing it.

勾玉もらっちゃった(^^) by スサノオ 【in appreciaion for】
The god Kushiakarutama-no-Mikoto heard the news.He carved and gave Susanoo-no-Mikoto a Magatama in appreciation for his work.
その事を知ったクシアカルタマノミコトと言う神は、
御礼にと自ら勾玉を削り、スサノオノミコトに与えます。

Another god, Kushiakarutama-no-Mikoto, heard the news.
He gave a magatama to Susanoo-no-Mikoto in appreciation for his work.
～～～
Susanoo-no-Mikoto offered the Magatama to Amaterasu-Omikami.
スサノオノミコトはそれを姉であるアマテラスオオミカミに献上します。
アマテラスオオミカミと勾玉 【rule over the earth peacefully】
Amaterasu-Omikami is the goddess called from heaven to rule over the earth.
アマテラスオオミカミは地上を治めるよう天から召された女神です。
She treasured the Magatama as a talisman to rule over the earth peacefully.This is what generations of Japanese Emperors have inherited.
彼女は地上を平和に治めるためのお守りとしてその勾玉を大切にし、
代々の天皇はそれを受け継いでいるのです。

She kept the magatama as a talisman to bring peace to the earth,
as have the emperors of Japan who have inherited it.

Kushiakarutama-no-mikoto, as the god in charge of polishing jewelry, is enshrined at Tamasakuyu Shrine (Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture) together with Susanoo-no-mikoto.
クシアカルタマノミコトは宝石を磨く事を司る神として、
スサノオノミコトと共に玉作湯神社(島根県松江市)に祀られています。
勾玉の穴の意味 【The Meaning of the Hole of Magatama】
Why does Magatama have a hole ?
勾玉にはなぜ穴が開いているのでしょうか？
You can make a necklace by threading a string through the hole of a Magatama and combining it with other beads.
紐を穴に通して他のビーズと組み合わせれば首飾りを作ることが出来ます。
That is, the hole has the role of connecting with others.
つまり穴は「他」と繋がる役割を持っているのです。

In other words, the hole functions in connecting with “others”.

What is “others” ?
「他」とは？
“Others” can be our ancestors, our descendants, and all things (people) around us.
例えば、先祖であり、子孫であり、身の回りの全て。

It could be our ancestors, our descendants— even everything around us.

For over 3,000 years, Magatama has been loved by gods and people.
勾玉は3000年の長きにわたって、神にそして人々に親しまれて来ました。
This may be because it continues to bring others together.
それは「他」との縁を結び続けて来たからかも知れません。

Perhaps their ability to stand the test of time comes from their power to connect and bring people together.

島根に来てビックリだったことの一つは
老若男女、かなりの確率で勾玉をご存知です。
私、島根に来るまで、
勾玉のことほぼほぼ知りませんでしたが、
ここ島根では勾玉がとても推されています。
小学校では、my勾玉を削る授業があったり、
社会科見学で勾玉を研磨している工房を訪れたり。
勾玉のメッカ松江市玉湯町に行くと、
街のあちこちに勾玉を模したオブジェや看板があったり。
さて3回にわたって英語で解説してみました「勾玉」、
