英語で勾玉について解説する試み、
二回目の今回は勾玉の形は何を表しているのかについて考えてみます。
勾玉の形って何に見えますか？
私、nobu☆的にはジェリービーンズみたいにも見え…。
いや、カシューナッツの様でもあり。
そうだ、やっぱりカシューナッツだ！
ね、そっくりですよね。
勾玉はその昔には「曲玉」とも表記されていたそうですが、
まさしく真ん中辺りでクイッと曲がった形をしていますね。
曲がっている玉(宝石)だから曲玉。
現代では勾玉と描かれる、このユニークな形の玉に込められた意味とは⁉

勾玉と太陽と月【What do the shape of Magatama look like?】

magatama represent the overlapping shapes of the sun and the moon.
特に有力なものとして「月と太陽」と言う説があります。

すなわち自然の力によって身を守ると人々は考えたとされています。

その系譜を継ぐ天皇も皇位継承の証として
代々勾玉を相続しています。

2019年5月1日に令和を迎えた日本。
第126代徳仁天皇陛下の即位からおよそ半年の間、
皇位継承に関する様々な儀式が執り行われましたね。
「剣璽等承継の儀」で「天叢雲剣」と「八尺瓊勾玉」の納められている箱が、
陛下の前に捧げられる様をテレビなどでご覧になった方も多いのではないでしょうか。
